On 31 March 2017, Haian Xue defended his doctoral dissertation On Design and Nostalgia: From the Perspectives of Culture, Experience and Design Strategy. In the autumn of 2017, Haian will leave Helsinki and join in the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft, the Netherlands, as a Post-doc Researcher.
Haian Xue (薛海安) has worked as the (Teaching & Managing) Assistant of IDBM Program, Aalto University School of Business and a Doctoral Candidate/Researcher at Department of Design, Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.
After obtaining his Bachelor of Engineering from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Master of Arts from Beijing Institute of Technology, Haian started his design research career at Central Saint Martins College in 2008 and then moved to Aalto University in 2010. In 2012, Haian was invited as a visiting scholar by Parsons the New School for Design in New York and he extended his design research network in both American design academia and industry during the half year visit. Also, in the 2013-2014 academic year, he was a visiting academic at Coventry School of Art and Design, Coventry University in England.
His research interests include Product/Brand Experience, Emotional Design, Design and Culture, Design Strategy, Brand and Design Heritage Management, Service Design and Designing for the Chinese Market. Haian connected several concepts to form the overarching theme – ‘Experience-driven Design, Memory, Nostalgia and Authenticity’ for his doctoral research. More specifically, he studied ‘(Cultural) Memory and Nostalgia’ in relation to accelerating changes, experience-driven design and design strategy, from a future-oriented perspective. His dissertation has been published in early 2017. Haian has given talks regarding different parts of his doctoral research in many countries, including the UK, Finland, the US, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, South Korea and China etc.
